International Stroke Conference

The International Stroke Conference is the world's largest stroke meeting and serves as a forum for communicating the latest research in wide-ranging interests and expertise in the areas of stroke prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation. This year's conference features more than 1300 abstract presentations, lectures, symposia, debates and networking opportunities.  Attendance at the conference is anticipated to be more than 3,700 professionals from around the world!

One exciting outcome already announced is a new, national multimedia public service advertisement (PSA) campaign to help people recognize and respond to stroke quickly. The American Heart Association, American Stroke Association and the Ad Council have joined together to launch the first national, PSA campaign to raise awareness of F.A.S.T., an acronym for recognizing and responding to the sudden warning signs of stroke.

F.A.S.T. stands for:

  • Face Drooping - Does one side of the face droop or is it numb? Ask the person to smile.
  • Arm Weakness - Is one arm weak or numb? Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?
  • Speech Difficulty - Is speech slurred? Is he or she unable to speak or hard to understand? Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence, like "the sky is blue." Is the sentence repeated correctly?
  • Time to call 911 - If the person shows any of these symptoms, even if the symptoms go away, call 9-1-1 and get him or her to the hospital immediately.
