In a 13-2 city council vote on July 2nd, it became official: all bars and restaurants in the city of Atlanta will now be smoke-free. This is a major win for not just patrons of eating establishments, but also the incredible staff that work and serve. These employees will no longer have to choose between their health, and a paycheck.
We know from scientific research secondhand smoke is dangerous. This most recent victory for health in Atlanta is supported by that, and the impact is also identified in this US Surgeon General Report. In 2006, it was found by the Surgeon General that there is no safe level of exposure to secondhand smoke. With a strong smoke-free law, like what was approved on July 2nd, it sends the message that health matters to all – not just in Atlanta, but in the state of Georgia.
While this smoke-free journey is not quite at the finish line, we hope you will share in this moment as we celebrate this win – for all Georgians.
