GUEST BLOG: From My Heart - Vitamin Sea & My Fam

Hello from PARADISE! Well, Anguilla to be exact. It is a British overseas territory in the Caribbean. It is one of the most northerly of the Leeward Islands lying east of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands and directly north of Saint MartinIt's gorgeous! It was past time for our family to take a heart-healthy vacation after a crazy year. How many people believe vacation to be an excuse to kick back, eat what you want to eat and be decadently lazy? Well, my vacation is a little bit of that but we are also finding creative ways to stay healthy and keep moving on vacation.

Did you know that running or walking in soft sand is a killer workout and can burn more calories than walking on hard surfaces? Well, my legs can tell you it is an AMAZING workout. Ouch! The American Heart Association recommends 30-minutes of moderate activity every day so we have been doing our best to add that to our vacation schedule each day! A few tips for beach running or walking:

  • Sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses
  • Morning and late evening mean fewer crowds
  • Sand can get burning hot in the afternoon sun
  • Remember landmarks and where you started—all those towels can look the same

Healthy food is always the way to go on vacation but treating yourself (in moderation) is a must! Yes, it is always good to eat foods that you may not get the chance to at home, but it’s very important to have balanced plate at every meal. The food choices here in Anguilla make eating heart-healthy easy with so many fresh fruit and fish options!

Reading is a great way to reduce stress and keep your heart happy while on vacation. Getting away from the busy lifestyle back home can help your heart in ways you can’t even imagine. A good book is always fun to read but also takes away stress.

Time spent with family always helps me to feel happy and healthy. Wonderful memories can be made with good friends and great family that can make you less stressed. I know that my family has been with me through it all and they continue to impact me in amazing ways. I am thankful for this time away from everything to just simply be with them.

I'm headed back home soon to keep advocating for heart-health and would love to have you join me! Add your voice and become an AHA advocate today by texting ABBY to 46839 or visit https://www.yourethecure.org/join. We need YOU in the fight to create heart-healthy communities!

For me, this vacation was about recharging and spending time with the people I love most! My heart is full and ready to see you all back at home soon!

Until next time,
