GUEST BLOG: Missing Advocacy Day? Here's what we can do to help.

Can’t come to the Capitol on May 1st for Arkansas Advocacy Day? That's okay, me neither! Hi, It's Abby Davis, a fellow AHA advocate and I'm busy with finals at law school in Fayetteville. But no worries, there are still plenty of ways we can use our voices, too!

Over the past eight years advocating for the AHA, I’ve participated in multiple lobby days and spoken to lawmakers in Washington D.C., Arkansas, and Oklahoma. These experiences ignited my passion to pursue law school and continue using my voice to make change happen.

Through these experiences, I’ve picked up some tips and tricks that helped me become a more effective communicator with lawmakers and I want to share them with you.

  • First, spend a little time learning about the issue you will be asking your lawmaker to support. You don't have to be a policy expert. You just need a few, brief talking points.
  • Second, know your WHY. Why are you passionate about this issue? Why should the lawmakers care? Practice articulating these points to convey them effectively to the lawmaker.
  • Third, don’t let fear hold you back. Speaking to lawmakers might seem intimidating, but remember, you aren’t alone! Lawmakers are there to represent you, and they genuinely want to hear from you. It is crucial to voice your concerns and share your perspective with them.

While I can't be at the Capitol for the event, I am going to ask you to take action on the HEARTS Act and send all the good vibes to those advocates joining together in Little Rock. Now, I am going to get back to studying - send good vibes my way, too. I hope to see you at the next AHA advocacy event!

With Heart,
