Apartment managers in Sioux Falls participated in a workshop offered by the Sious Falls Health Deparmtnet to learn how offering smoke-free environments can boost their bottom line. More than half the structure fires in Sioux Falls last year were attributed to cigarettes and smoking. Property owners are finding that in addition to the health benefits of a smoke free environment, there is a growing demand for smoke-free living spaces.
Workshop sponsors, including members of the Sioux Empire Tobacco Free Coalition and the City of Sioux Falls Health Department, said officials plan to follow up with property owners who attended the workshop to see whether they’ve made changes to their smoking policies.
The Live Well Sioux Falls initiative recently led the city to enact a tobacco-free parks policy which applies to activities involving children, such as soccer and softball games in city parks and playgrounds. We applaud the efforts of Live Well Sioux Falls to encourage heart-healthy living. For more on this story, CLICK HERE.
