Get ready, get set, get Cardiac Emergency Response Plans in schools!

As students athletes get ready to start the new school year, we are reminded of the need to have cardiac emergency response plans in schools (CERPS). While students, faculty, staff, and community members can all be save by CERPS, Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) is the #1 cause of death for student athletes. When a SCA happens, every minute is a 10% decrease in chance of survival.

When a school has a CERP, they can provide care faster by knowing how to access all the care someone needs. This means anyone who experiences a SCA at a school can receive faster care and a better chance of survival. With approximately only 42% of those who experience a cardiac arrest outside of a hospital receiving immediate care, having a faster way to get care can mean a matter of life or death. This is especially the case in areas where emergency systems might not be easily available.

We are pleased to announce that many states, including Maryland, have adopted versions of these plans. But, we are still fighting in many other states in our region and for a federal law to require these plans. If you are interested in these campaigns, please let us know and we’ll tell you how to best take action in your state and community.
