From Arizona to Capitol Hill

After covering 6.5 miles and taking 16,750 steps, our five dedicated advocates engaged with five out of 11 Arizona congressional offices. Their mission? To advocate for the Access to AEDs Act and the HEARTS Act during the American Heart Association’s 2024 Federal Fly-In.

Our Arizona survivors, Pyper and Emeri Midkiff, who have experienced cardiac arrest firsthand, passionately shared their stories alongside their father Matt. They emphasized the critical importance of having accessible automated external defibrillators (AEDs) in schools. By preventing others from facing similar hardships, they hope for this legislation to pass and to help save lives.

Our Arizona-based volunteer physicians, Dr. Reshy Gomes and Dr. Reza Movahed, underscored the urgency of AED deployment. In cases of cardiac arrest, every minute counts. Without prompt CPR and defibrillation, survival chances decrease by 10% per minute.

The day of advocacy on Capitol Hill was nothing short of amazing. Team Arizona represented our cause fearlessly. Looking ahead, we are eager to continue advocating for cardiac emergency response plans (CERPs) during the next legislative session in Arizona.
