As you may be aware, the American Heart Association and many other organizations have been working all year on Senate Bill 104 / Assembly Bill 111, legislation that would ensure all newborns in Wisconsin are screened for congenital heart defects prior to hospital discharge.

Despite the importance of this screening, receiving a hearing on this issue has always been something of a long shot.  Recently, a promising new opportunity has presented itself and gives us a much better chance at success.  Thanks in part to your advocacy efforts, Senator Vukmir, Chair of the Senate Health Committee, has expressed her support for an alternative path: giving an advisory committee, housed at the Department of Health Services, the authority to add a screening like pulse oximetry to the list of screenings babies receive before they leave the hospital.  This path, while not the path we originally set out on, achieves the same goal of ensuring all babies are screened for critical congenital heart defects!

That being said, there is still a lot of work to be done and we cannot count this as a forgone conclusion yet.  If you’d like to learn more about this exciting development, you are invited to join a conference call we are hosting on Thursday, December 12th.  This quick, 15 to 30 minute update call will get you up to speed about this new development, what the next steps are, and how you can help advocate.  Please drop an email to [email protected] if you plan on calling in.  Dial-in information is below.
