On May 10, the American Heart Association joined with community partners in Elizabeth to welcome a new corner store to the New Jersey Healthy Corner Store Initiative.

Although “You’re the Cure” advocates are still fighting for passage of the “Healthy Small Food Retailer Act” that would make public funding for efforts like the NJ Healthy Corner Store Initiative possible, we have been able to welcome new stores to the program when private funding becomes available.
Emily’s Supermarket is close to Elizabeth High School. The festivities included a DJ, crafts for the kids, health screenings, games and of course healthy snacks. Representatives from the American Heart Association, Shaping Elizabeth and the Mayor’s office held a brief press conference to thank Emily’s for their participation in the New Jersey Healthy Corner Store Initiative. These festivities began around 2:30 to allow for school children and their families to attend on their way home from school. Emily’s Supermarket on Clarkson Avenue became the first store in Elizabeth to join the initiative.
We would like to thank our partners at Bayway Family Success Center, City of Elizabeth, City of Elizabeth Board of Education, The Food Trust, Housing Authority of the City of Elizabeth, New Jersey Department of Health, Rutgers Cooperative Extension, Rutgers SNAP-Ed, Shaping Elizabeth, Trinitas Regional Medical Center, and the Gateway Family YMCA for making the event a success.
