Chicago Public Schools adopts new PE policy to get kids active

Last week, the Chicago Board of Education unanimously voted to adopt a new Physical Education Policy that recognizes physical education as a core subject within Chicago Public Schools. The policy, which will be implemented across the district over the next three years, will help kids understand and embrace the importance of physical activity in their academic success and overall health. It:

  • Requires at least 30 minutes of daily physical education (or equivalent of 150 minutes per week) at the elementary school level.
  • Requires daily physical education in the same time increments as other core courses at the high school level (grades 9-12).
  • Allows health education to be counted towards the physical education requirement beginning in grade 5.

Congratulations to the volunteers in Chicago and to the many other partner organizations who were instrumental on this lifesaving success!
