Big Announcement on Flavored E-cigarettes and Vaping Products

We are excited to share on Tuesday June 16 the Montana Department of Health and Human Services issued a proposed rule that would permanently restrict the sale of flavored e-cigarette/vape products in Montana!

We applaud the Department of Health for taking this action to protect Montana kids and public health across the state. The American Heart Association sees this as a first step and we look forward to working with state decision makers to restrict the sale of all flavored tobacco products including mint and menthol in order to reduce the use of these addictive products. Research shows that 81% of youth who try tobacco chose a flavored tobacco product.

The tobacco industry spends almost $30 million each year marketing their products in Montana. We believe this as well as the number of flavored tobacco products on the market is why we see such a high rate of youth trying these flavored products. According to the Montana Youth Behavior Risk Survey, 30 percent of Montana youth currently use e-cigarette products.  Daily use of these products has increased by 263% from 2017 to 2019.

Thank you to all our advocates who have helped us work on tobacco control issues in Montana and we look forward to continuing to work  with you on both local and statewide policies in the near future.  If you would like to hear more about this effort please reach out to us and we would be happy to talk with you about how you can be involved.
