This past Thursday, April 16th, the state legislature adjourned, ending a brief 8 day fiscal session. It was, as you can imagine, an unusual session. To observe social distancing recommendations, the Arkansas Senate used both the Senate Floor and gallery to be able to spread out, and the House met at a local basketball arena to be able to keep their distance. The legislature was able to quickly adopt a budget and provide for additional costs associated with COVID-19 and unemployment claims.
We have some great news to share. The Arkansas legislature easily reauthorized Medicaid expansion. This is of critical importance to make sure people in our state have access to health coverage. In recent years, Medicaid has been a contentious issue. But with the threat of the pandemic, and with so many Arkansans depending on Medicaid, the re-authorization passed without a single "no" vote.
