On Thursday, January 19th You’re the Cure volunteers, survivors, and American Heart Association staff visited the Capitol in Phoenix to raise awareness about heart disease and advocate for a statewide policies to help make Arizona a heart healthier state.

Thanks to our volunteers, Arizona’s Heart at the Capitol was a very successful event! The day started with a brief advocacy training in the morning at the Wesley Bolin Plaza followed by advocates heading over to the House and Senate buildings for office legislative meetings. We met directly with legislators to build support for legislation that would establish a statewide tobacco retail license program and build momentum for House Bill 2142 which would help SNAP recipients purchase more fruits and vegetables with their benefits.

Following the scheduled legislative meetings, our group regrouped at our meeting spot for lunch and a brief presentation. We want to thank our MC, Victoria Stinson – Arizona Advocacy Committee Chair, Dr. Mendivil for speaking about his perspective around youth tobacco use as a school Superintendent, and Adrienne Udarbe for speaking about the importance of HB 2142.
This ended our event, but this was a great way for us to start conversations with legislators as HB 2335 and HB 2190 move through the legislative process.
