Medicaid Restoration and Expansion Update

In January, Arizona’s Governor Jan Brewer  announced her plan to cover all Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCCS) patients in Arizona up to 133% of the Federal Poverty Level.  Over next 5 months, she held numerous community forums, rallies and events to promote her plan.  The biggest rally of all was held on May 15, 2013 at the State Capitol.  The event was attended by over 1,500 people from all sectors of the community.  The Governor’s Plan to restore coverage to Arizona’s most needy is bold and courageous.  She is upholding the will of the voters who have already said this population deserves to have medical coverage, through two previous ballot initiatives.

Each day, thousands of Arizona citizens are going to the emergency room for medical treatment because they have no other place to go.  Not only does this put a strain on our hospital networks, it also costs money.  The average family pays nearly $2,000 in additional insurance premiums to cover the cost of uncompensated care.  This “hidden tax” costs all of us.  During the next couple of weeks, the Arizona House of Representatives will take up this issue.  Be on the look-out for alerts calling for you to contact your members in support of AHCCCS restoration.
