On Friday, September 26, members of the Central Arkansas Health Equity Committee met and continued their focus to promote multicultural programs that reach across central Arkansas.  The committee, led by Co-Chairs Wonder Lowe and Deborah Rhodes, focuses on heart and stroke issues with specific emphasis on educational efforts with nutrition, physical activity, and hypertension control.

Members of the Healthy Equity Committee are also active You’re the Cure advocates and are looking forward to making an impact during the 2015 Legislative Session.  Their community outreach skills make them exceptional grassroots advocates.

As Check. Change. Control. Ambassadors the volunteers signed the Association Sodium Pledge, wrote notes to key members of Congress by signing letters seeking support for increased NIH research funding, and learned about the public policy agenda for the Association for 2015.

They also developed their personal “Life is Why” message.  The members enjoyed a Simple Cooking with Heart Recipe of Quick Chicken Chili prepared by committee member Michelle Cleary and AHA Intern Joyce White.

The Health Equity team members work diligently on key activities that reach across cultural boundaries to address health disparities in diverse populations.  Some of the activities include Vestido Rojo which is a Go Red for Women event for Hispanic women, Check. Change. Control.  a program to address high blood pressure and Simple Cooking with Heart educational cooking demonstrations.
