Advocates Participate in Heart Walk

Our advocates are passionate about our mission!  Whether it’s contacting legislators during session, writing letters to the editor or participating in an Advocacy training, our advocates are making a difference.  One way our advocates impact policy is through participating in the Heart Walk.  Participating on a Heart Walk team helps to raise money to support research, but it also helps to support our policy agenda at the state and local level.  In addition, the Heart Walk is a great example of our “mission in motion,” encouraging individuals and organizations to get active and embrace a healthy lifestyle through walking and heart-healthy educational opportunities.

This past year, our advocates helped pass a law that would ensure all newborn babies are screened for congenital heart defects before leaving the hospital.  Our advocates helped to pass the state-wide smoke free law a few years ago.  Our advocates are working at the local level to encourage CPR as a high school graduation requirement.  All these policies help to support the mission of the American Heart Association, which is building healthier lives free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke.

Encourage your friends and family to participate in a Heart Walk near you.  The Eastern South Dakota Heart Walk is Saturday, August 17th in Sioux Falls.  The Black Hills Heart Walk is Saturday, September 14th in Rapid City, and the Central South Dakota Heart Walk is Saturday, September 21st.  By walking together, we can all live healthier lives!
