Dennise Whitley, Maine

I spent 13 years of my professional life working in advocacy and government relations for the American Heart Association and the American Stroke Association in Maine (AHA/ASA).  I feel these years were the most productive and rewarding of my long career in the health field. In the policy successes of a strengthened emergency medical system, tobacco control and prevention, obesity awareness and education and the recognition of heart disease in women, I saw the immense value of collaborative partnerships and the power of a committed staff and devoted volunteer team.  The AHA/ASA recognizes the impact of policy change at all governmental levels on its mission and devotes resources to facilitate and strengthen advocacy efforts.

I experienced the satisfaction of working for a volunteer-led national organization that has a clearly defined mission, based on research, to build healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke. I am still committed to that mission, and, now I am a volunteer advocate. I welcome this opportunity to continue as an AHA/ASA team member.

I know this sounds a bit like a “love letter” to a great organization………and it is!
