Advocacy at the Dallas Heart Walk

Saturday, September 9th, the advocacy team headed to the Dallas Heart Walk to grow the You’re the Cure network and build support for healthy policies in schools and communities by collecting healthy food access and quality physical education petition cards. The team collected over 1,100 petition cards and spoke with heart walk participants about advocacy at the AHA and talked to them about some of the policies we're working on.

Twelve awesome advocacy volunteers attended the Heart Walk, including a survivor, a PE teacher, several students, and a three-time heart walk volunteer all-star. Advocates Jo and Jim staffed the advocacy booth, while everyone else roamed the event, collecting petition cards from heart walk participants, sponsors, and attendees.

The advocates spoke to attendees about the importance of quality PE standards in school - including getting enough minutes of physical education in the school week, and getting enough vigorous exercise. Advocates also talked to attendees about the need for access to healthy foods across Dallas neighborhoods so residents can make the healthy choice the easy choice.

The team had a great time and set the bar even higher for future heart walks!
