The new legislative session is underway and the American Heart Association continues our efforts to ensure all New Jerseyans have access to the resources they need to live a healthy life. One of the most basic building blocks of a healthy lifestyle is a healthy diet. A diet rich in vegetables and fruits and low in fat, sodium and sugar is essential to prevent heart disease, stroke, diabetes and other chronic diseases.
Those of you "You're the Cure" advocates that have been active with us for a while know that one of the policies we are seeking is a small amount of state funding for the NJ Healthy Corner Stores Initiative. Through this voluntary initiative, small business owners are able to access resources that are needed to sell healthier food in their establishment. Corner stores and bodegas have a reputation for selling processed, unhealthy items, but it doesn't have to be that way. In over 100 stores throughout NJ, small stores are selling healthier items and their customers are buying them. In addition to improving diets in food desert communities, economic development is also happening.
The Healthy Small Food Retailer Act is being considered again this session and we hope to engage some of the newly elected legislators in our efforts as well as our new Governor. I hope that you will continue to be a voice for a healthier New Jersey as we advocate for improved healthy food access throughout the Garden State.
